a GINORMOUS underwear & sock collection benefiting local families in need!!!

Project Change hopes to raise 50,000+ pairs of new underwear and socks that can be distributed to many of the local non-profit shelters, day cares and homeless services organizations in the communities of our 17 teams. This basic need is an issue across the country and we hope to raise awareness to it, while we knock the socks off of several communities when they see what can happen when we come together for a cause!

Now thru May 6th 2011 Project Change - Team Awaken KC, will be collecting donations of NEW packaged underwear and socks for those in need (All Sizes Welcome!).

Border Challenge for Autism III

Procedes from this years Border Challenge for Autism event are divided between two GREAT organizations fighting Autism! The School (KU or MU) wih the most supporters will get 60% of the procedes from this years event! Kansas University took home the crown in 2010 and was awarded a $6,000 check from the Project Change, Awaken KC team! Be a part of this event in 2011 and help your school fight Autism!

Sleepyhead Beds - Bed Collection and Delivery

www.sleepyheadbeds.org is a non-profit charitable organization within the Greater Kansas City Area. Filling a very simple, very large need. Collecting gently used, unwanted mattresses, sanitizing and sterilizing them & distributing them to children in need. As Awaken KC during our challenge in the month of March we would like to help Sleepyhead Beds by; Raising awareness, creating a mattress drive and spending time picking up, cleaning and delivering the mattresses to the families in need.

Valentines for Veterans at Kaleidescope

For our first Challenge Awaken KC has decided to bring together the creativity of the youth and create unique Valentine's Day Cards for Veterans. Kaleidescope, at Hallmark, has generously agreed to work with us to set up times for families to bring in their children and donate their remnants towards this projects. We will then deliver the cards to local VA hospitals and VFWs to spread much needed smiles to service men and women.

2011 Challenge Update! ! !

Challenge One ::: We will make Valentine Cards with kids for Veterans!!! Using repurosed materials for the cards, bringing kids from all our family's together & supporting our tropps here at home with some much needed love!
Create Change without $Change$ (Due on or before February 18th, 2011)
No Money? NO PROBEL! This Project is meant to address the ongoing speed bump that keeps people from geting involved - CASH! Your team will be challenged to put your creativity to the test and leave your wallets at home! No need to purchase items, ask for money or use your own, there are many opportunities to repurpose existing items, donate your time, spend time with someone, build relationships and connect to make a difference. Let's shed that roadblock and a little light on the new ways to get involved at the same time!

Challenge Two ::: We will be dedicated to finding beds for SleepyHeadBeds.org & helping their cause however we can!!! Lets put our heads, hands and helpfulness together to spread the word and make sure a few more local families have beds to sleep on!
See-A-Need -> Fill-A-Need (Due on or before March 25th, 2011)
Making a Difference can be simple! During this project, you are challenged to work together wtih your selected benefiting organizationto idenify a basic need. Your team will provide comfort by finding a creative way to reach across the gap and work together and fill it!

Challenge Three ::: We have choosen to do the Border Challenge for Austism once again! ! !
Grow Change - Create Hope (Due on or be April 29th, 2011)
During your finial project we challenge you to choose something that will continue to make an impact after you leave. This could mean SO many things! Plant a tree or community garden, teach someone to read, restore, repurpose or create and item that will continue to aid someone in the community or educate others about a local need and grow change beyond Project Change!

Challenge Four - the Group Project!
Mission Underpants! (May 2011)
This is a very common need for children, women and men who are struggling or homeless. This will be a one-day project, however it may include an ongoing rally throughout the season where teams are encouraged to have their own collections from now until our final push in May. There will be an award to that team the gathers the most underwear and socks prior to the group event!

May 2009 - Nurture the Children

Working with the Thompson Center & KCART

Project: Hosting "Border Challenge for Autism" benefiting the Thompson Center & KCART .

Challenge Leaders: Mike Christianer, Marsha Hoffman & Kate Wind (SFS Architecture), Bonnie (encompass).

Status: Mike, Marsha, Kate & Bonnie have been meeting tirelessly to set up a great event. They have organize a wonderful night of rivalry & fun for a good cause, at Boulevard Brewing Company.

April 2009 - Save the Planet

Working with Community LINC

Project: Plant a Rain Garden and installing a French Drain to help with drainage and create a Community Garden at Community LINC. ***ACCOMPLISHED***

Challenge Leaders: Matt and Lisa (Patti Banks Associates) & Melody and Patti (sfs architecture)

Status: Matt, Brett, Melody and Patti visited the site to see what was feasible to assist with drainage issues and developing a community garden. Thanks to some dedicated volunteers from Church of the Reserection a 12" x 12" trench was dung during one of the last (or not...) snows of the season. Matt, Lisa, Melody and Patti are working on a plan and contacting organizations that might be interested in partnering on the community garden.

We will be installing a French Drain, planting a Rain Garden and creating a community garden at Community LINC. The French Drain will be located at the south side of the buildings, where the parking lot and a down spout drains along the side of Building 6. There is an obvious drainage problem, causing flooding to occur in the basement of one of their buildings. Patti Banks Associates has already laid out a plan to drain the water towards the street and the future Rain Garden. To date we have the trench dug, Applied Ecological Services is graciously donating plants for the Rain Garden, we are still looking for organizations that might be interested in partnering on the community garden or donating.

March 2009 - Warm the Homeless

Working with Community LINC

Project: Renovating the Teen Space at Community LINC.

Challenge Update: 90% Complete

Status: Early in March a group of dedicated volunteers and Team Members cleared the space and prepped it for pouring concrete. Together AL Huber, Wallace Engineers, Lankford Engineers, LaFarge and Western Fireproofing poured a beautiful topping on the current 1" thick slab. The last two weekends of March have been used to paint and finish the space. Stone walls were painted by hand, walls were repaired, chairs were recovered, track lights were wired & hung and a chalk board has been installed in the bathroom! The unveiling of the space to the teens was Thursday April 2nd, 2009 (as seen on the 10pm News).

CF Wood Products did the new counter tops, Gragg's Paint generously donated an incredibly large quantity of paint, and George G. Shaw Construction finished, saw cut and sealed the beautiful new concrete floor in in the basement.

March 2009 - Warm the Homeless

Working with Community LINC

Project: Renovating the Teen Space at Community LINC.

Challenge Leaders: Dean, Randy, Jaime (AL Huber), Mike, Darcey (Wallace Engineers), Linsay & Greg (Lankford Engineers).

Status: Randy Huber & Mike Hurd visited Community LINC and went through the list in person to see what projects we want to include for this Challenge.

We will be renovating the Teen Space at Community LINC. The space is located in the basement of one of their buildings and is very depressing right now. AL Huber has already secured a sub-contract to redo the concrete floor in the basement. Together AL Huber, Wallace Engineers, Lankford Engineers, LaFarge and Western Fireproofing will be pouring a topping on the current 1" thick slab. Simultaneously SFS Architecture and Encompas will be working on the interiors, to make this a fun space for the kids to hang out and study. To date we have met with the Teens to get their ideas and input on their future meeting space, as well as begun the process of prepping the space for renovation.

Working with Community LINC

Project: Food collection to stock up new resident apartments/education on how to cook economically. Donation of pasta and ingredients, cooking class and recipe cards for economical/healthy dishes.

Challenge Leaders: Laura Daggett (American Italian Pasta)

Status: AIPC made a generous donation of pasta, other ingredients and monetary help (Laura Daggett helped facilitate this donation). Laura pulled in house recipes from AIPC and other recipes from the team's home kitchens. We worked with Cecile to coordinate the appropriate times to meet with residents for cooking classes. Pasta 101 included information on cooking pasta, tips from our own kitchens, and a lively discussion of how to eat the foods we love cheap and easily.
